Newborns do not have the ability to self settle

The idea that newborns can be left alone to get to sleep is totally wrong. Newborns do not have the ability to self settle. It’s our role as parents and carers to support them off to sleep, especially in the first 12 weeks of life. You can cuddle, rock, pat, feed to sleep. If your goal is for them to self settle long term, then you can slowly back off how much support you are giving but not before 12 weeks.
